Horizontal Striped Dresses

Striped dresses have always been held in high regard due to their apparent slimming properties when carefully selected. Popular belief had deemed that vertical stripes make you look thinner whilst horizontals ones make your body appear larger. However according to present studies, this isn’t right.

Dispelling the myth
As was discovered by Thompson & Mike llidou between the years of 2008 and 2001, there are no perception differences between wearing horizontal stripes and wearing any other form of dress. This study observed 120 different participants, all of which were unaware of the actual purpose of their survey. Each participate was asked to state their perception of a subject wearing a dress with vertical, horizontal and then no stripes. Their rating of the subject’s body size was given and noted. The study revealed that there was no significant change of perception, regardless of dress type!

Many disagree
Despite this proven fact there are bound to be many that still disagree with the notion. Perhaps the research that was undertaken did not involve enough test subjects to accurately gauge something as personal as perception. Fashion sense is something that, for the most part, is highly subjective. Many females steer clear of horizontal stripes at all costs, can they all be wrong? There is so much conflicting information that the only thing that is certain is that the controversy regarding the effects of stripes on striped dresses requires much more research before anything can be seen as definitive. There is a real life illusion known at the Helmholtz illusion that stands ready to argue the studies before mentioned. Whether this principal is reflected or not in fashion is yet to be proven, but it logically seems applicable.  It will be extremely fascinating to see what is revealed next by the following inquiring mind delving into the issue of striped dresses.
